In a scintillating start to the new season, Hideki Matsuyama conquered the field at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu and snagged the trophy. He covered up a five-shot deficit on the back nine to make a comeback and beat the eventual runner-up Russell Henley in a playoff, by hitting the most beautiful 3-wood eagle that the golf world has ever seen.
The first two rounds of 66 and 65 proved to be substandard and didn’t rank him high enough on the leaderboard. However, it all worked out eventually as two consecutive rounds of 63 led him and Henley to play the last couple of holes in a lopsided field, four strokes ahead of Kevin Kisner. Meanwhile, fuelled by his excellent performance of the day, the Japanese star claimed the playoff while nerves, unfortunately, got the better of Henley.

PGA tour reveals how Hideki Matsuyama mastered putting
The PGA tour posted a video on Instagram, giving an insight into the way the 2021 Masters winner went about his green practice. In it, the hole can be seen surrounded by multiple tees, as Hideki goes around draining the balls in. Essentially, he is getting a feel of the same distance from different angles and slopes, slowly pushing the distance out. If he misses one of three shots from any location, he would start all three again. Really, a great way to understand the short putting game!
