Two months after the Ryder Cup heroics, Ludvig Aberg recounts asking his playing partner, “What is going on? we’re like nine up?”

At the beginning of the day, they were the underdogs. Scheffler, the then and current World No. 1, was paired up with experienced Ryder Cupper Brooks Koepka to put the two upstart Europeans in their place. However, it was Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg who ran rings around the Americans with a 9&7 victory, ending the match even before it kicked into fourth gear.

Ludvig Aberg believes it was a bad day for both

Aberg was surprised to find it that easy. Obviously, going against two of the best players in the generation, the Swede was expecting tough competition. “I was obviously expecting a tough match,” Aberg admits on the Smylie Show.

Naturally, golf analysts and fans have been brutal in slamming the American duo for their horrendous outing at the prestigious tournament. But Aberg believes Scheffler and Koepka simply had a bad day. “Brooks and Scottie maybe didn’t have their best day, which, you know, is what it is.”

Adding further, the 24-year-old said, “Foursome is a weird format.” It relies on a joint performance, and “sometimes, one of them can get thrown off a little bit.” In foursomes, two pairs of golfers take alternate shots with the same ball, which has a very “weird dynamic,” as the Swede explains.

However, what transpired at Marco Simone baffled many. While Hovland and Aberg built on top of their first-day bonding, Koepka and Scheffler appeared as hapless as they could be.

A nightmare for Brooks Koepka and Scottie Scheffler 

The pounding was more bewildering because Aberg turned pro just months before the Ryder Cup. Additionally, Hovland’s only previous Ryder Cup appearance was in the 2021 Whistling Straits outing, where the U.S. thrashed Europe with a 19-9 victory. Moreover, Scheffler and Kopeka boasted six majors between them, whereas Hovland had none and Aberg had never even participated in one.
