It was the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2021, and the professional golfers were practicing their swings in anticipation of the big match. In an effort to mess with his fellow golfer, Mickelson casually reached into DeChambeau’s bag during a practice round and pulled out an 8-iron. He then reshaped it a bit.

Mickelson later posted the act on Twitter, along with the wish that DeChambeau had plenty of cause to hit 8-iron this week. He wrote, Hopefully there’s a lot of 8 irons for @b_dechambeau this week @RocketClassic and next Tuesday’s Match.”

Bryson DeChambeau on the Mickelson’s prank

Bryson DeChambeau was defending his title at the Rocket Mortgage Classic that year. Mickelson, who won the PGA Championship, was also competing. Shortly after the teams were announced in May, DeChambeau told Golfweek that Mickelson had no chance of beating him. And we all know how that story ended.

In the second and third matches, Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers won by playing a changed alternate shot format at The Reserve at Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Montana. DeChambeau chipped in for birdie on the first hole to take the lead, but Brady and Mickelson rallied to tie things up on the seventh hole. However, Mickelson and his team missed the putt that would have kept them in the game, and Rodgers’ birdie putt sealed the victory for him and DeChambeau.
