The Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, situated near the beautiful Lake Michigan, hosted the PGA Championship in 2015. While the lake gave its spectators a beautiful image to remember for life on the 7th hole named Shipwreck, it gave a nightmare for the PGA Tour pro-golfer John Daly!
The golfer needed a good score to make the cut at the major tournament when he entered the second round at the Whistling Straits. However, as its name suggests, the seventh hole wrecked his dream as his tee shot ended up in Lake Michigan not once but thrice.

Thankfully, Daly‘s fourth try found dry land. However, the frustration of not being able to do well at a tournament where he had won before led him to fling his iron to the beautiful Lake.
A young boy became the savior of the club!
The then 49-year-old threw away his club to the water body, leaving it there to sink. However, a kind young boy couldn’t watch it happen and he went on to retrieve it from his boat.
“Oh my goodness,” the commentators could only exclaim as the young fans managed to get an invaluable souvenir from a former champion of the major tournament. “I don’t think John wants it back either,” the commentator added.

Despite throwing the club that led to an expensive par-3 hole, John Daly couldn’t retrieve himself from getting eliminated. He scored an 82 from the second round by going 10-over par. The golfer scored an overall 11-over par after the first two rounds and got out of the major.

Daly has been playing golf professionally for 30+ years. And over this period, he has won more than 5 titles worldwide. Yet, his first and only victory at the 1991 PGA Championship remains the most memorable one ever.
In 1991, the golfer was just a PGA Tour rookie player. Daly was also the ninth alternate in the 1991 PGA Championship. However, his luck and talent helped him win the major tournament. The entire golf world was stunned to see him score 69-67-69-71 in the four rounds without the benefit of a practice round. Furthermore, the PGA Tour honored him with the Rookie of the Year for his victory at the Crooked Stick.

The former champion of the major left the Whistling Straits with one of the darkest memory of his life, which he would want to forget. Meanwhile, the young boy made a wonderful memory at the event as he got the golfer’s club as a souvenir.
