Daly held a two-shot advantage as he approached the last hole and had a 60-foot two-putt for victory. During his walk, he paused in front of a large Arnold Palmer umbrella logo that had been painted in the fairway as a memorial to the late legend. Daly got down on his knees and kissed it before continuing.

When playing partner Kenny Perry failed to make a birdie of his own, Daly only needed three putts to win. Several of Daly’s pals, including his peers, rushed onto the green after he won to pour and sputter champagne on the two-time major champion.

Though Big John’s maiden PGA Champions Tour victory was an elation to many golf fans, his tribute to the golfing legend touched many hearts. A year before Daly’s big win, Palmer had passed away. Both golfers shared a great respect for each other thus justifying John Daly’s gesture.

An iconic story of Daly and Palmer

When Arnold Palmer passed away back in 2016, many golfers and celebrities paid their tributes to the 7-time Major champion. Like many others, Daly took the opportunity to share an iconic story about the golfing legend.

Daly shared his story with the Rock Bottom Golf back in 2016. He said, “My favorite story about Arnold Palmer would be (that) one time we’re at Bay Hill and I’m playing with him on the 10th hole. And he asked me and Kenny Perry that, ‘you all ever heard about this blue pill called Viagra?’”

The 56-year-old ended by labeling Arnold Palmer as one of the greatest. Daly said, “He was the greatest ambassador for the game of golf. Rest in peace Arnie, we love you. We miss you.” It’s great to see the love and respect John Daly has for Arnold Palmer despite the criticism he receives for his witty character.
