At the start of a new year, many cultures have many different rituals. While some cultures believe in eating grapes, others wear specific colors. The Japanese, on the other hand, believe in Daruma dolls. A few PGA Tour players recently adopted this ritual too, hoping to be showered with good luck during the year. Among them were the likes of Justin Thomas and Tony Finau, who announced their goals for the year while painting their dolls.

Thomas had a fairly decent year in 2022, winning a major championship on the Tour. But like all devoted athletes, he aims for more. Tony Finau, on the other hand, had a spectacular year in 2022. He won three times on the tour. So, what does he hope to accomplish? Read on to find out what many of the golf pros wished for.

Justin Thomas wishes for more success on the tour

The start of the new year brought along new dreams and hopes for the PGA Tour stars, and many recently painted the eyes of Daruma dolls, hoping to have a bit of assistance in achieving them. The dolls are supposed to bring luck and help fulfill the goal one sets while hurting one eye. Once that goal is achieved, the second eye is to be painted in.

Justin Thomas wished to “win a major championship” during the year. The pro has always had a goal to achieve great things and many wins on the tour. He stated as he painted the doll’s eye, “I’m going to have win a major on there, and I’m just going to keep working hard at home.” He added that he hoped he could fill in the other eyes soon.

Tony Finau, who has already seen his first win this season, didn’t wish for more wins. He instead said that his goal was to lead a healthier lifestyle. He explained, “[I want to] push myself to work out and, most importantly, to eat better.”

Collin Morikawa painted himself a Daruma doll. While painting in the eye, the golf pro stated that he wished to “get back in the winner’s circle.” The two-time major championship winner saw his last win on the Tour back in 2021. He added that he hoped the doll gave him some good luck.

The 24-year-old Kaito Onishi, who plays on the Korn Ferry tour, too, had goals set for himself. He wanted to “finish on top” of his tour, but that wasn’t his only goal. “My ultimate goal is to really try to get my card for the next season,” he stated.

The PGA Tour veteran, Adam Scott, too wanted to grab a win on the tour. He said, while marking his doll’s eye, “My goal this year is to win on the PGA Tour and win a major championship.” It’s been over two years since Scott’s last tour win and nearly a decade since his first and last major win.
