All sports memorabilia needs some sort of authentication to be considered an original piece. Athletes usually include a signed letter of authenticity with their belongings. Golf was no different either, until recently, when Phil Mickelson took things up a notch with a modern take on authentication.

Recently, Phil posted a video of him authenticating two golf clubs that he was giving out to his friends.

Phil Mickelson gives away his putters

With only a month left this year, it might as well be the last video Phil posts before 2023, and it was certainly unexpected. In a tweet, the Golden Age auction posted a homemade video of Phil, clad in all black, confirming that he was giving out two of his putters to friends. They wrote, “You’ve heard of a Letter of Authenticity, but how ‘bout this VIDEO of Authenticity from Phil Mickelson himself.”

In the video, Phil went on to describe the putters in detail for over a minute. He explained that he had personally used both putters and even won events with one of them. He said, “I’ve used them in tournaments in the early 2000s,” and added, “I won with the teryllium for sure; I’m not sure if I’ve won with this black one or not; I’ll have to go back and look.”

Phil even got into the making of the clubs and said, “These were both handmade by Scotty and myself around 2000, 2001.” Many fans would undoubtedly want to get their hands on Mickelson’s winning putter. And Lefty’s authenticity video made the clubs even more valuable. One of them was being auctioned and had  a bid of over $8000.

It’s been a great year for golf memorabilia

Golden Age confirmed that Mickelson’s authentication video was the first of its kind. But it certainly wasn’t the first piece of golf memorabilia to trend this year. There was, in fact, a collectible sold this year that broke an auction record. It belonged to none other than Tiger Woods himself.

Tiger Woods’ clubs, which he used to win his famous “Tiger Slam,” were sold for over $5 million early in the year by Golden Age Auctions. The set was sold for $5,156,152, setting the record for the most expensive golf item ever sold at an auction.
