Breaking the stereotypes, the 40-year-old, Jhonattan Vegas, came from an area where golf wasn’t pursued much. But now, with his 10+ years as a professional, he has had a tremendous impact on society. He won his last tournament at the 3M Open, ending his 7-year-long drought after winning thrice on the tour. But away from his achievements, his family background and their contribution to his success are still unknown to many.

Following Carlos Vegas, who was a passionate golfer, Jhonattan Vegas started at a young age, but unlike the plastic golf clubs that kids use. Jr. Vegas started with a broomstick and a rock. But soon after looking at his persuasion, Carlos Vegas helped him and his brother with exposure to golf. Vegas was born in Maturin, Venezuela, where, following golf, meant limited opportunities. Considering this, he moved to the US with his coach at the age of 17 and got a scholarship at the University of Texas.

Born to Carlos and Maritza Vegas on August 19, 1984, Jhonattan Vegas is of Hispanic origin and is a Venezuelan. Apart from his parents’ names and ethnicity, there isn’t much information available about the family. However, being a Venezuelan descent, he made history in 2011 after gaining the PGA Tour card and achieving his first victory at the Bob Hope Classic. With his second start on the tour, he beat Gary Woodland on the second playoff hole to create history.

His journey has been an inspiration, away from the country’s tradition, which focused on baseball and soccer only. Well, apart from just creating history with his appearance and victory in 2011, the golfer has continued to leave an impact with his performance. Even in his recent PGA Championship, he recorded 7-under, 64 to become the first Venezuelan to hold lead/co-lead in a major championship.

Jhonattan Vegas’s career achievements

The breakthrough moment in 2011 from Vegas started a spree by representing Latin America in elite golf. The University of Texas alum became the first Venezuelan to play regularly on the PGA Tour, to compete in the Presidents Cup (2017), and to represent the country in golf at the Olympics (2016 and 2020).

Notably, Vegas has been in the playoffs twice and has a 100% win rate. He won the first at the Bob Hope Classic in 2011 and then in 2017 at the RBC Canadian Open, beating Charley Hoffman. In 2017, he defended his title at the RBC Canadian Open, increasing the win count to three. After that, the win count came to a halt, and till 2024, he stood victoryless. On July 28, 2024, he broke the 7-year victory drought at the 3M Open with 17 under, 267, winning over Max Greyserman by one stroke.
