Additionally, it also recognized the decision-making on and off the course, helping the team. The player, possessing a blend of sporting performance, team-first conduct, leadership, integrity, and respect, will be chosen by a committee comprising of representatives from the PGA of America, Ryder Cup Europe, and Aon.

The award, inspired by the famous moment between Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin, will be presented for the third time at the 2025 Ryder Cup. But before looking at this year’s honorees, it’s worth revisiting the iconic act of sportsmanship that gave birth to the tradition.

Historical significance of the “concession”

In the 1969 Ryder Cup at Royal Birkdale, the competition was tied until the final singles match between Jack Nicklaus (USA) and Tony Jacklin (Great Britain). In fact, the match was tied till the 18th hole. On the final putt, Nicklaus carded a par putt from 2 feet, but interestingly, he didn’t want his fellow to experience the pressure, which is why he conceded Jacklin’s putt.

Talking of which, he said, “I don’t believe you would have missed that putt, but I’d never give you the opportunity in these circumstances.” The result of his attempt not just halved the match but also resulted in a tie for the first time in the history of the Ryder Cup. The fierce competition, which showcased some rivalry and bitterness, ended with hostilities giving way to friendship/ respect.

Past recipients of the Nicklaus-Jacklin award

The 2021 Ryder Cup edition at Whistling Straits was the first time the Nicklaus-Jacklin Award was introduced. For that edition, Dustin Johnson and Sergio Garcia were honored for their outstanding overall sportsmanship during the tournament. Dustin Johnson, the oldest member of the US team in 2021, recorded a 5-0-0 record. He became the first American, after Larry Nelson in 1979, to do so. In fact, for the team matches, he partnered with two rookies (Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa).

After him, Sergio Garcia was awarded for his incredible record of 3-1-0 and teamwork with Jon Rahm. The duo trailed 3-down after three holes with remarkable resilience. Even though the American side won by 19-9 over Europe, players from both teams were awarded for their exceptional performance.

Furthermore, in the last edition, Justin Rose was the only player to receive the award. Rose on the first day carded a decisive putt on the 18th hole to turn the losing match into a halve.
