A new world-class competition curated especially for the veterans of golf, the World Champions Cup, will be held this week at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida, starting December 7th. The prize purse is a lucrative $1.35 million, out of which the winning team will bag $100,000 per player.

Each team will feature six players with a playing captain who must be an active PGA Tour Champions member. Deemed to be similar to the Ryder Cup, the event, which will be exclusively covered by ESPN and ABC, will witness Darren Clarke, the 2011 Open Championship victor, as the European team captain, Jim Furyk, the highly decorated PGA Tour winner, as the American side’s captain, and the legendary Earnie else captaining the third and final international team.

Round-wise walk-through of the World Champions Cup

The starting rounds on Thursday and Friday will have a three-match session of six ball and a three-match session of scotch sixsome. The final round on Sunday will then see twelve singles matches played in two waves. Surprisingly, Saturday will be the day of the pro-am for the event!

  • The Scotch Sixsome:

In this format, single golfers from both teams will play on each hole. Both players will use one ball only to finish their holes on alternate chances. That team that ends up with the minimal score on every hole will get two points. The team that follows them in the score on a hole will be awarded one point. And teams that end up with the highest score will get no points.

  • Six Ball:

In a six-ball game, each member of both teams will play with their own ball, holding it to the end. The scoring format for this is similar to Scotch Sixsome, where the team with the lowest score will be given two points, the team with the second lowest score will be given one point, and the team with the highest score will be granted none.

The singles that will be held on Sunday will be played like a regular 1v1 singles match, with the pros playing for every hole. Scoring will be the same as the six-ball and six-some. If the golfers of different teams end up with the same score on a hole, then they will receive the same points.

Each hole has a point value of three, and it is mandatory for all teams to play on all holes. If it so happens that two teams end up in a tie for the lowest score on a hole, then they will each be awarded 1.5 points.

Although different from the Ryder Cup, the event seems to generate the same buzz considering the international loyalty that comes into play with it. Who do you think will take home the inaugural trophy for the event? Let us know in the comments below.
