As always, the launch of the issue caused a backlash. Former ESPN personality, Britt McHenry, was one of the prominent dissidents, sharing her insurgent thoughts on Twitter.

“Why does a woman have to pose nude to feel “empowered”? Isn’t it more empowering to keep your clothes on, go into an office or classroom like everyone else and excel? #SISwimSuit desperately wanting to compete with IG models with gimmicks,” she tweeted on her verified account.

Paige Spiranac also made her debut on SI on the same issue. Irked by McHenry’s comments, she choose to defend her rights on her choices. “Different women feel empowered in different ways and it’s not right to tell someone what they can and cannot do,” she responded.
