There was a time when Mickelson’s wife and mother were both struggling from breast cancer. Mickelson had to take a break from golf after he discovered that his family was struggling. However, he was a little relieved when radiation oncologist, Dr. Tom Buchholz from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston entered the picture. The doctor treated both Mickelson’s family members after the diagnosis and worked hard towards making them better.

Mickelson is widely known for his random acts of kindness. And one can only imagine what he would do when it was related to his family. For returning his favors, Mickelson left tournament passes for Buchholz, his family as well as the staff at the hospital. But that was not all. Mickelson even asked Buchholz to come and hold his bag at the 14th tee. Jim Bones was Lefty’s caddie at the time, who passed the bag to the doctor.

In his interview after the round, Mickelson said“This man has helped us through some of the toughest times that we’ve gone through…He’s the best at what he does,”. But who knew that Buchholz also had some caddying experience from the past? The cancer specialist had caddied for Allen Miller in 1984 after his college. “I ended up making a birdie, and I kept making birdies. We went 3-for-3 together,” Mickelson said.

The doctor was not the only one who was there to support Mickelson during the time. Even Mickelson’s long-time rival, Tiger Woods, sent him supportive texts wishing Amy Mickelson a speedy recovery. He wrote that he wished that the doctors soon find a cure for her. However, Lefty joked about Woods’ game in response to the text and said he hoped they found a cure for Woods’ swing too!
