There is a chance you can spot Angel Cabrera at this year’s Masters. But the journey is still long and arduous. The former Masters champion was convicted in several cases of domestic violence. After his 30-month incarceration in two of the most violent Latin American prisons, the two-time Major Champion was released on parole in August.

Speculations have been running high since then about whether the Latin American star can play on the PGA Tour, where he has three wins, the last of which came in the Greenbrier Classic ten years ago. On the heels of the PGA Tour’s positive announcement came the green signal from the Augusta chief.

How can Angel Cabrera play at the Masters?

Speaking at the Latin America Amateur Championship at Santa Maria Golf Club, Fred Ridley said they are willing to welcome Angel Cabrera back, provided he sorts out his legal problems. “As we all know, he has been unable to participate in the Masters the last couple of years due to legal issues… we’ll definitely welcome him back if he’s able to straighten out those legal issues,” the 71-year-old chairman noted.

Currently, Cabrera can’t enter the U.S. during the Masters, which is in April, as his visa will expire this month. That is why the Latin American star is reportedly listed as a ‘non-invited’ past champion as of now. However, that could soon change, as his lawyers are in talks to iron out the issues quickly.

Speaking to Golfweek, Angel Cabrera’s legal team said, “securing a visa is Angel’s priority at the moment so he can resume his professional career.” Currently, they are trying to schedule an appointment with the U.S. embassy to speed up the process. Cabrera also came close to earning his second Green Jacket in the 2013 Masters but lost the playoff against Adam Scott.

Nevertheless, once that clearance is given, Cabrera will be able to tee up at Augusta in April. But before that, the 54-year-old golfer will play at the PGA Tour Champions as soon as next month.

Another piece of good news for Angel Cabrera

Cabrera will return to the Champions Circuit for next month’s trophy, Hasan II, at the Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in the Moroccan capital city of Rabat. Cabrera doesn’t need a visa to travel to Rabat. Furthermore, as per the same report, the Argentine has also received an exemption to play at the Insperity Invitational in Houston.

Notably, the veteran golfer was arrested after flying out of his home country in 2020 to play in the U.S. That resulted in an Interpol red alert notice against him. Upon his return to Brazil, the veteran golfer was arrested and subsequently served two consecutive sentences in Brazil and Argentina. Since the court has cleared him of the charges, he is slated to tee up at the Visa Argentinian Open in Buenos Aires as part of the Korn Ferry Tour.
