Where is Rory McIlroy playing next?

Rory McIlroy will play at the 2025 Truist Championship as the defending champion. The tournament will take place at the Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course from May 7–11. This will be his first individual appearance since winning the Masters.

This participation will offer McIlroy an opportunity to bounce back from his Zurich Classic performance and gain momentum before the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. With a $20 million total purse, the stakes are high. While the runner-up receives $2.16 million, the winner will receive $3.6 million. His participation was confirmed by the Truist Championship’s official Instagram account, which shared a picture of McIlroy along with the message, “See you in Philly, @RoryMcIlroy! 🤩#TruistChampionship.”

Taking place before the season’s second major, the field is a competitive one and includes big names like Ludvig Åberg, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Akshay Bhatia, Patrick Cantlay, Nick Dunlap, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, and Xander Schauffele. However, the World No. 1 and the 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson winner, Scottie Scheffler, has chosen to forego the competition to maybe focus on the PGA Championship. 

The Truist Championship promises four days of fierce competition with no cut and a small field of 72 players. All eyes will be on Philadelphia to see if McIlroy can step up to the plate as he looks to add another championship to his stellar 2025 campaign. Also, aside from the course, McIlroy has mindfully widened his off-course business endeavors. 

McIlroy joins $200 billion firm TPG

Along with his on-course endeavors, McIlroy has broadened his off-course business endeavors by collaborating with the private equity firm TPG to establish TPG Sports, an investment platform aimed at revolutionizing the sports sector. McIlroy will act as an operating partner through his company, Symphony Ventures, to invest in sports leagues, teams, and businesses.

With assets under management of almost $200 billion, TPG has a track record of making well-known media and entertainment investments, such as Spotify and Creative Artists Agency holdings. The goal of the collaboration with McIlroy is to use this expertise to expand sports companies worldwide.

McIlroy sees this endeavor as a calculated move outside of golf that offers a competitive outlet and a chance to support the modernization and professionalization of the sports sector. He stated, “Sport is undergoing a big transformation. There is a lot of investment going into the sports world and trying to make it more professional and trying to bring it into the 21st century.”
