Ever since the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League entered into the playing field of golf, a lot has changed. Many major names from the Golf World have already defected from the PGA Tour to the above-mentioned. One of the many players who defected to LIV Golf is Phil Mickelson.


Mickelson’s shift was one of the most talked about ones during these uncertain times. People contrasted his decision with Tiger Woods’s decision to stay on the PGA Tour. As per sources, Woods let go of a hefty amount of money in order to maintain his loyalty to the PGA Tour.

Tiger Woods vs Phil Mickelson: Who made the right choice?

Phil Mickelson accepted LIV Golf’s offer. The 52-year-old made it to the top of the Forbes 2022 list of highest-paid golfers. According to Forbes, “Lefty crossed $1 billion in career earnings thanks to his LIV deal. One of only a handful of players (including Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Vijay Singh and Tom Watson) to earn a lifetime membership on the PGA Tour, Mickelson had that privilege suspended after he joined LIV.”

However, Tiger Woods, who was already on the list of the three billionaire athletes in the world, according to Forbes chose to not take help from the Saudis. Woods decided to remain a part of the PGA Tour and not defect to LIV Golf.

Righty was offered a total of $800M by the Saudi-backed league. Yet he chose to reject the huge amount. Had Woods chosen to accept, his net worth would have almost doubled up. But that was not what Woods wanted for himself, rather he chose the PGA Tour.

Woods and the other billionaire athletes

Only Michael Jordan and LeBron James once occupied the billionaire athlete club. Michael Jordan is a former professional basketball player. He is accredited to be the greatest basketball player of all time. While LeBron James is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA and is counted amongst the best, too.

Tiger Woods joined the aforementioned athletes in the billionaire athlete club recently without even making a shift to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf. The league was a major driver of the increase in net worth of most golfers, however, Woods was not one of them.
