Elvis Smylie is a 22-year-old golfer from Queensland, Australia. He has three wins to his name, in just 3 three years of turning professional. That only makes sense since the left-handed pro has a sports DNA that interestingly, is inclined more toward tennis. His parents, Peter and Liz Smylie, are former professional tennis players.

The duo played tennis throughout their career and let the sport carve their love story as well. Or, as Elizabeth says, “It was love at first sight!” Indeed, a win-win situation where you not only marry your profession but your tennis coach as well. Yes, you read that right! In 1983, Peter Smylie made a tough decision—he waved goodbye to his playing days to coach his wife Liz Smylie, and the results were phenomenal!

Elizabeth Smylie, born in 1963 in Perth, is perhaps the most accomplished tennis player in Western Australia. During her active tennis days, she won three singles titles and twenty-eight WTA doubles titles. Impressive enough? Well, there’s more to the list. Smiley also competed for Australia in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where she won a bronze in the women’s doubles competition.

From 1983 to 1993, Smylie won four Grand Slam doubles championships. She peaked at number 20 in singles and fifth in doubles. This was the exact time when she teamed up with her husband, Peter Smylie, after their engagement in 1983. From there, Elizabeth’s career only went up! She secured a high ranking of 41 in the world ranking. Additionally, her ranking also brought her nearly $500000.

Liz Smylie pointed out how being in a relationship with someone from the same profession left her worry-free. “I don’t have to worry about getting dates or finding someone to go to movies with,” pointing out to her partner in crime, Peter Smylie. “I also don’t have to worry about having someone to abuse,” she added.

Who is the Smylie family’s biggest supporting hand?

While Elvis Smylie’s mother rocked the 80s-90’s tennis courts, his dad was no less! The rising star’s father, Peter Smylie, played doubles and participated in three Grand Slam main events during his career. He participated in the mixed doubles at the 1983 French Open after competing in the men’s doubles at the 1978 Australian Open and 1982 Wimbledon Championships.

In 1983, Peter Smylie gave up on his career to coach his wife, Liz Smylie. A sacrifice for love and winning together! Soon after that, the duo had three children—two sons and a daughter. Apart from tennis, Smylie loved music. Music also inspired him to name his son Elvis. During an interview with the Australian Golf Digest, Elvis Smylie revealed, “He saw Elvis Presley front row with John McEnroe in the ’70s. My dad’s love for Elvis led to me being named Elvis.” The 66-year-old is now a real estate sales executive, following a career in sports management.

Even though Elvis has more tennis and a less golf background, he says, “For me, tennis was always in the background; it was something to do just for fun.” And his biggest support system was his parents. They always had his back. When Elvis was in school at the Glades, he would always go down to the practice range every day before school. “My dad got me into it,” he revealed gratefully. “I’ve been very fortunate to be surrounded by them,” he continued.
