The unconventional journey of Mitchell Theoret

Mitchell Theoret’s path to becoming a caddie for Taylor Pendrith is a unique one. Before stepping onto the golf course, he had an accomplished career as a professional ice hockey player. He played for the Niagara IceDogs of the Ontario Hockey League. He even earned a spot in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft for the New York Islanders. However, a season-ending injury during his time playing in Norway set him on an unexpected course towards golf.

“I had never thought in a million years I would be doing what I’m doing. I had been playing hockey over in Norway and after a season-ending injury, my good friend (Taylor Pendrith) asked me if I wanted to caddie for him one week,” Theoret recalled as per Golf Monthly’s recent report.

Since teaming up with Mitchell Theoret as his caddie, Taylor Pendrith has experienced notable success on the golf course. Together, they have celebrated several remarkable victories, showcasing their strong partnership and Pendrith’s exceptional skills.

One notable triumph for Pendrith came at the 2021 Canada Life Open on the Korn Ferry Tour. It was a breakthrough moment for Pendrith as he secured his first professional victory. With Theoret by his side, the PGA Tour pro showcased his talent and composure, navigating the challenges of the tournament to emerge as the champion.

Theoret’s made the tough switch from ice hockey to golf

Notable performances include a T2 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, a T8 at the BMW Championship, and T13 finishes at The Players Championship and the Wyndham Championship.

The decision to pursue golf alongside Pendrith was not an easy one for Theoret. Simply put, it meant leaving behind a promising hockey career. However, the opportunity to work closely with the golf pro and immerse himself in the world of golf ultimately influenced his decision.

“Fast forward almost a year, and I was finishing up my season in the Czech Republic when I got the call again, but this time for it to be more permanent. I ended up spending the whole summer caddying for him and then made the tough decision whether to keep pursuing hockey or give this a go,” Theoret shared.
