And for that exists the New York State Golf Association (NYSGA), an organization dedicated to preserving golf traditions in the state of New York. Since its establishment in 1923, the NYSGA has been responsible for organizing the NYS Amateur Championships.

Who is the Founder of NYSGA golf?

NYSGA oversees the qualification process for the United States Golf Association Championships and hosts a series of popular handicapped events called the Amateur Series. Beyond organizing tournaments, the NYSGA offers various member services. These include handicapping, course measurement, scholarships, training, rules education, marketing opportunities, and communication support.

Sherrill Sherman, a prominent figure in Utica, New York, and in the world of golf, played a significant role in the formation of NYSGA. Born in 1883, he was not only an accomplished amateur golfer but also an active contributor to the sport.

He attended the Utica Free Academy and Hamilton College, where he excelled in various sports. Throughout his life, he held various positions in different companies, including the presidency of Roberts Hardware Company. However, golf was his true passion.

Sherman was instrumental in organizing the Golf League of the Iroquois in 1913, which included cities like Utica, Rome, Syracuse, and Buffalo. He was also a member of the United States Golf Association. He won the City of Utica’s first Amateur City Title.

The legend’s contributions extended beyond golf. He held memberships in various clubs and associations.

Sherrill Sherman passed away in 1962, leaving a legacy of dedication to the sport and his community. Flags at the Yahnundasis Golf & Country Club were lowered to honor his memory. Like him, there have been several prominent members who have been a part of NYSGA.

The list of important members of the NYSGA is never-ending. Walter Hagen, 45-time PGA Tour winner, was an esteemed member of the association. Alongside was veteran Helen L Hicks Harb, who was a member. She was instrumental in the foundation of the LPGA, being one of the thirteen people who started it.

A member of the family referred to as the ‘Golf Dynasty’ by a 2000 New York Times article revealed that Michael C Turnesa aka Mike Turnesa was also a member of the NYSGA. The winner of 21 PGA Tour titles and three major championships, Craig Woods was also associated with the golf association.
