Phil has played many noteworthy games, and they’re all followed by memorable interviews. Following Mickelson’s famous defeat to Payne Stewart in 1999, Phil wasn’t as heartbroken as he was on the course; in fact, he was excited because he was due to become a father anytime then. He said, “This is a disappointing day, but in the next couple of days we’re expecting our first child, so that evens it out.” I’m pretty excited about that.”

Lefty is also famous for his recent press statement, which he claims was off the record. In a phone conversation, he described the LIV Golf League officials as “scary moth**r f**kers.” He went on to join LIV Golf in 2022, creating a lot of controversy in the golf community.

Mickelson’s hilarious response to a radio broadcaster

Another run-in with the media that Phil had was after the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Phil’s response to Scoops Callahan, who was an old-school radio broadcaster, was hilarious. Phil’s final round ended with a birdie, which was all thanks to an amazing blind shot that went over trees and a bunker and landed 10 feet from the hole.

Scoops went up to Phil after the game and questioned him loudly with excitement, “Champ, champ! “Was the key to winning today’s tournament bringing out the old Billy Baroo and sinking those putts like a Tommy Gun on Valentine’s Day?” Scoops were undoubtedly referring to the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and Judge Smails’ putter in’ Caddyshack.

Phil was taken aback, looked Scoops straight in the face, and said, “Why are you yelling?” You’re a foot from me.” Scoops, like the rest of the audience, laughed, and he then introduced himself, “Scoops Callahan from the ticket here, Phil. Congratulations.” Phil went on to describe the excitement he felt from the win and said, “Thank you, Scoops. Y’know it was a fun round and to birdie the last hole to win by one was an awesome feeling. Scoops.” Clearly, Phil was amused by Scoops’ name.
