This is the week of international tournaments for all golf leagues. While the PGA Tour is hosting the Zozo Championship in Japan, the Ladies European Tour returns to India for the Hero Women’s Indian Open. And the LPGA Tour is hosting the BMW Ladies Championship in South Korea and top players have assembled to compete at the event.

The championship marks the return of star player Nelly Korda who has been MIA since her team’s defeat at the Solheim Cup. This week she decided to make a comeback in South Korea and at the press conference revealed the reason for it.

Nelly Korda reveals why she chose Korea for her comeback

Played since 2019 the BMW Ladies Championship is always held in Wonju, South Korea, in association with the LPGA of Korea Tour. The 72-hole event has 78 players with no cut and all players play all four rounds. Lydia Ko, who won in 2022, is returning as the defending champion.

Also marking her comeback at the event is Nelly Korda who is returning after a short sabbatical. At the event’s presser at Seowon Valley Paju, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, she was asked if there was a particular reason why she decided to return to Korea or the Asian golfing scene this year, and how has it been for her to come back after four years.

To this, Korda responded, “Yeah, obviously, you know, during COVID I didn’t really want to travel too much internationally. But obviously, since the travel restrictions have been lifted and everything is much easier, there’s no better place than to play in front of all the Korean fans. They’re very passionate, and they’re really fun to play in front of.”

Korda also expressed her love for South Korea’s food and culture,And I just — I really like it here. I enjoy the food. I enjoy the culture and obviously the people as well.” The last time Nelly played in the event was in the inaugural year of 2019. After that, the pandemic hit and international travel was banned for a long time.

Nelly Korda’s short sabbatical and performance at BMW

After the defeat at the Solheim Cup in September, Korda skipped the Walmart Arkansas event, the Ascendant event, and last week’s Shanghai event. She even took a small social media hiatus to ease her mind. Her performance this week in Korea is good.

In the first round, she delivered a mix of bogeys and birdies and finished with under 2. In the second round on Friday, she made five birdies which escalated her position. With 6 under she wrapped the second round on 7th on the leaderboard and successfully made the cut. How will she do in the remaining two rounds, we will soon find out.
