Phil Mickelson has been making the headlines for all the wrong reasons lately. He recently requested an exemption from the PGA Tour to compete in the inaugural event of the LIV Golf Invitational. Not to mention, the 25th of April was the deadline set by the PGA Tour, and Phil submitted his request on the final day.

However, if he competes in the rival LIV Golf Invitational Series, will he be able to compete in the major championships again? Well, there is no concrete answer to this question yet. But given the stance of the PGA Tour commissioner and other governing bodies, Phil might face some issues. 

It is important to note that the PGA Tour has no power over the four majors in golf. Several governing bodies like Augusta National, USGA, PGA of America, and R&A look after their respective major championships. Hence, even if PGA Tour bans Phil Mickelson from competing on the tour, we might still see him playing major events if these bodies decide to not take any action.

What do these governing bodies think about Phil Mickelson competing at the LIV Golf Invitational Series?

The Augusta National, USGA, and R&A had issued statements in May 2021. They had shown their support to the PGA Tour, but they did not address the playing status of the players who would join the rival league. Moreover, only the PGA of America openly revealed that any player who competes in the rival league will not be allowed to compete in the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup.

However, reports have confirmed that they will not take any action for this year’s PGA Championship. But, there are still ongoing conversations on this issue, as there are plenty of legal complications that the governing bodies need to keep in mind. Therefore, as of now, there is no real threat to Phil Mickelson or any other player. 

The LIV Golf Invitational series has a partnership with the Asian Tour. This will make the golfers eligible to receive OWGR points. Therefore, this will also ensure that even if Phil Mickelson or any other golfer doesn’t compete on the PGA Tour, they still will receive OWGR points to get into the four major championships.
