The PNC Championship, previously known as the Father/Son Challenge, was first held in 1995 in Windsor Club, Florida. The challenge has the IMG and NBC at the heart of it and was renamed in 2005 after the sponsor changed from Office Depot to the MBNA World Points challenge.

The event saw the change again in 2006 to Del Webb. However, the partnership ended in 2011, and the PNC Financial Services Group Inc. became the title sponsor of the event for the 2012 edition. The challenge was then renamed in 2020 to the PNC Championship from the PNC Father/Son Challenge.
