For the names who are running in the lead for Ryder spots, this was the only chance to prove their worth in the last week. The golden opportunity is seized by a newly turned professional player who bead odds to secure the first prize at the Omega European Masters.

Former World No. 1 amateur golfer wins Omega European Masters

Very soon Team Europe captain Luke Donald will announce his six Captain’s picks for his team and the suspense will end. But before that, the players who had higher chances of making it to the team gave their best efforts at the Omega Masters. 

And the winner improved his Cup chances at the event. Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg has won the Omega European Masters. This is the first win of Aberg of his professional career and on the DP World Tour as well. He attained this victory in his third start only. Proud of his win he said, “It’s a pretty surreal feeling, to be honest. I always had that feeling that I could do it.”

Omega has the prize purse of $2 million out of which Aberg takes home $534, 947.  This win and the consideration for Ryder Cup is a big feat for Aberg who has just turned professional in June 2023, which ended his amateur career ranked first on the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

His 2-shot win over defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick who too is in consideration for the Cup has weighed things in Aberg’s favor.

 Ludvig Aberg beats Matt Fitzpatrick in the final round of the European Masters

Aberg finished the final round with a 6-under 64 and a total finish of 19-under total of 261. He made four straight birdies from holes nos. 14 to 17. Fitzpatrick who was leading during the day by 3 strokes soon made back-to-back bogey. Quickly Aberg seized the day with a 5-shot turnaround left which was clear by two strokes.

Speaking about the win improving his Rydrr Cup chances he said, “I figured a win would put me in a good position. Honestly, I’ve done a pretty good job of not thinking about it too much.”
