Scottie Scheffler scales new heights in the PGA Tour

The Jack Nicklaus trophy, awarded to the PGA Tour Player of the Year, was bestowed upon Scheffler under surprising circumstances. The Texas golf alum was in Austin on the sidelines of ESPN’s College Gameday program when he was rewarded for a fantastic 2022 season.

With the Jack Nicklaus trophy, Scheffler is the maiden golfer to win all three major awards in history. He has also won them in quick succession – he won the Player of the Year on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2019 before securing the Arnold Palmer Award, awarded to the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, in 2020.

The feather in the cap, the Jack Nicklaus trophy, helped complete an unmatched trio of trophies even legends like Tiger Woods find missing from their trophy cabinets. Scheffler won the trophy ahead of the likes of FedEx Cup champion, Rory McIlroy and LIV Golf defector, Cameron Smith.

The award is voted by PGA Tour members who contested in at least 15 official FedEx Cup events during the 2021-22 season. The PGA Tour Commissioner, Jay Monahan, had words of appreciation for Scheffler. “On behalf of the PGA Tour, congratulations to Scottie on his remarkable season and his unprecedented achievements,” he said in a news release.

“Undoubtably, one of the highest compliments a player can receive is the endorsement from his peers, and the fact that Scottie’s season was both dominant and consistent spoke volumes to the membership…..we are equally thankful that Scottie has embraced the role as an ambassador of the PGA Tour and the game of golf.”

2022 – Scottie Scheffler’s remarkable year

In terms of numbers, Scheffler has had an outstanding season. His stats read – 10 Top 5 finishes in 25 starts, 4 runner-up finishes, and 4 remarkable victories. His wins include – the WM Phoenix Open, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies, and the coveted Masters’ Tournament.

He was ranked World No.1 for 24 weeks for the first time following his WGC victory and followed up the celebrations by winning his first-ever Green Jacket. Scheffler also ended up with the highest total earnings for a golfer in history, pocketing $14,046,910 in official tournament money. Adding up all the bonuses he collected during the course of the season, the figure stands at an eye-watering $24,796,910.

Still only 26, Scheffler has a long way to go. If he continues this kind of run in the following years, the record books might need a lengthy overhaul.
