World No. 1 Lydia Ko Set to Make a Staggering Change Ahead of Her Much Anticipated Kick-off of the 2023 Season

Lydia Ko is a trendsetter in the world of women’s golf. She holds the record of being the youngest player to win a professional golf tournament at the age of 15. The Australian pro golfer is known for her exceptional gameplay and also for her habit of changing caddies.

With her 2022 comeback, Ko has become the women’s world no.1 and is also 3 points closer to the Hall of Fame. The 25-year-old also won the Vare trophy for the lowest scoring average. But, what massive change is she making that has the golf world talking?

The women’s World No.1, is set for her comeback in 2023 with a new caddie – David Jones. Jones will be assisting her when she opens for the Aramco Saudi Ladies International

The duo has worked together before, during the 2021 Lotte Championship. The Irishman recently worked with Nick Taylor. In 2016, he caddied for In Gee Chun and she won the Evian Championship. Moreover, Jones was on the bag for Sung Hyun Park during her two majors wins in 2017 and 2018.

Ko’s sister confirmed the news to Golfweek. Derek Kristler caddied for her during the last season, and given her stellar win, this change seems very unexpected. Moreover, savoring a great success with the Kiwi does not guarantee a permanent spot on her team.

The whole incident serves as evidence of Ko’s notorious habit of changing caddies.

Does Ko have a caddie-player bonding with her caddies?

The most time a player spends after their families, is with their caddie. One would think that this leads to a close knit friendship between the duo. But for Ko, maybe that’s not the case.  

In 2014, Ko won the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year award. And she had a long list of caddies to thank for supporting her during this journey. “I want to thank Scott, Mark, Steve, Steve, Domingo, Fluff, Greg, Jason,” she said.

The legend has worked with 9 different caddies during her career. Her former caddie Gary Matthews even said that she needs to understand the importance of the caddie-player relationship.
