2022 PGA Championship Host: All You Need to Know About the Southern Hills Country Club

Southern Hills, the host of the 2022 PGA Championship is a par-70 golf course, measuring 7,556 yards. Raymond Floyd set the course record at this challenging layout by shooting a 63 at the 1982 PGA and then in 2007 Tiger Woods equaled Floyd’s score en route to clinching the Wanamaker trophy.

Southern Hills was originally designed by Perry Maxwell in 1930 when it was opened. The golf course was then redesigned in 2018 by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner and got re-opened in 2019

Keyholes at Southern Hills

2nd (Par-4, 500 yards)-  This hole demands an accurate approach shot as the greens are well guarded by bunkers. 

12th (Par-4, 456 yards)- With the fairway sloping from the right to left, this hole has a blind tee shot. And the approach shot needs to carry the water and some bunkers to reach the green.

18th (Par-4, 491 yards)-  With a treacherous putting green, severely sloping from the front, and a tough tee shot that needs to land on the left portion of the fairway, the last hole could be a deciding one at the 2022 PGA Championship.

Grand slam bound?

As the second major of the year comes around, it’s a good opportunity for the three-time major championship winner Jordan Spieth to complete a career grand slam. Given his form in mid-April when he won the RBC Heritage, Spieth is certainly capable of securing a win at the 2022 PGA Championship. Spieth’s best finish at the major is the solo second (2015). However, the favorites to win the championship are Scottie Scheffler, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland, John Rahm, Patrick Cantlay,  Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Will Zalatoris, Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffele. The championship will have a prize purse of $12,000,000. And the winner will take home $2,160,000. Moreover the winner of the event will get 600 Fedex cup points and 100 Official World Golf Ranking points. Plus a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour.

The PGA Championship is a 156-player field, where after the 36-hole cut top-70 and ties remain. The PGA Championship is in the PGA Tour’s schedule. However the PGA Championship is conducted by the PGA of America.
