But in the last year, the ‘Golden Bear of golf’ has been involved in a lawsuit with his formerly-owned Nicklaus Companies. And after one year of legal fighting, his case has finally been given a verdict. Unfortunately, things are not in Nicklaus’ favor this time.

Jack Nicklaus loses critical rights in the legal battle with Nicklaus Companies

Nicklaus took his love for the golf course beyond just playing on the green. Nicklaus owns a golf course design business and has been involved in designing numerous courses internationally. But this has caused him legal pains lately. In 2022, the 18-time major winner was sued by Nicklaus Companies for claiming rights over his company Nicklaus Companies that also prevented him from using his own name, image, and likeness for commercial purposes in the future.

Jack Nicklaus had been fighting the legal fight for almost a year now. But according to recent reports, he has lost the legal battle. According to the ruling, he cannot use the IP he transferred to Nicklaus Companies anymore for commercial endorsements.

In 2005, after retiring from professional golf, Jack Nicklaus started his business with Howard Milstein as a business partner. A subsequent deal was signed between him and Nicklaus Companies, LLC, where he was to own 51% and Milstein 49% shares. For this, Nicklaus was given $145 million in 2007. A lot of complications happened in the following years and the breaking point came in May 2022, when Nicklaus resigned from the board offices in a letter to Milstein and opted for an arbitration.

From owner to a disrespected employee! The verdict rubs it in for Nicklaus

During the last year, he tried his best to hold on to his identity for future business prospects. In the affidavit he filed in September, Jack Nicklaus said, “Howard claims that I cannot use my own name, image, or likeness in connection with commercial ventures in which I am involved in the future. I don’t see how that can be right, but at this point, I haven’t made any decisions as to branding.”

He also said in the affidavit that he went from the owner of his company to a disrespected employee and had been incredibly hurt by it.

The verdict must come as a big setback for the 73-time PGA Tour winner who has had a successful career as a businessman.
