Ryder Cup this season has been a wild mess, and for Team America, the European crowd’s hostility has made things worse. Americans had a rough first-day start at the game in Rome, with the overall score of 61⁄2-11⁄2. The scores left the fans and the golf world in shock, as this was the first time in Ryder Cup history that the European team had a 4–0 lead after the first session. This year’s game seems to have changed a lot of perspectives and dynamics, especially within the American Team.

Patrick Cantlay’s Saturday ruckus made Team America lose face in front of the European crowd. After the incident, the crowd chanted mocking slogans for Patrick Cantlay, and this had Team America take a step back, move above the internal disputes, and show their camaraderie on the Roman greens. Here is what exactly happened.

Patrick Cantlay, in the company of Wyndham Clark, ended Day 2 for the Americans with a 1-up win in the last fourball, but by the time he had finished, the European crowd had already turned their backs on him, mocking him for the remark he had made on the course.

Before his game, Cantlay refused to wear his team cap, and when asked about it, he ascertained that he believed the players should be paid for playing in the Ryder Cup. This statement created a rift between the US teammates as the players sat separately from Patrick Cantlay in the back room.
