Jack Nicklaus shared his father’s crucial life advice

Charlie Nicklaus left the world when he was 56 years old. Father to golf legend Jack Nicklaus, Charlie played an essential role in ‘The Golden Bear’s’ life. Fans don’t know much about the kind of relationship Jack Nicklaus had with his old man. However, there was a time when Jack Nicklaus shed some light on how important his dad was to him.

Nicklaus, who still misses his father ‘every day’, opened up about his father’s golden advice to him 47 years after his death. “Dad taught me the right way. He taught me how to be a good sport, how to make sure that if you lose it’s not the end of the world,” he said.

Charlie’s life advice for his son was not only limited to golf. He also taught his son how important it was to stick to one’s words and promises in life. “Your word is your bond. And you got to deal with what you’re dealt,” Nicklaus recalled.

Charlie’s death was a shock to the golf great. His performances in professional tournaments started deteriorating event by event. But he soon realized that he needed to buckle up as the ride ahead wasn’t going to be easy. “I wouldn’t say I was motivated by my dad’s death, by any means, but I certainly felt like you’re only here for a short period of time and you really need to give your best,” he said.

And that is when great things started to happen. The years 1970 to 1972 proved to be some of the most successful years of his career. The golfer managed to ace a total of 5 majors in those three years and ended up winning eight in the same decade. Contrary to Nicklaus’ belief, his wife Barbara stated that all his victories after Charlie’s demise were dedicated to his old man.
