The relationship between male golfers and the USGA was already strained; however, the revision of rules added more heat to it in 2019. During the 2019 Honda Classic, a two-stroke penalty was given to Adam Schenk, and Justin Thomas took it to the next level. The PGA golfer tweeted, “Grow the game,” and included a screenshot of the penalty. He also mentioned that USGA should start communicating with the PGA golfers. The golfer hoped that in the future, it would better the game and that all the golfers would benefit from it.
However, the results of the pro golfer’s tweet backfired. USGA went past its breaking point after Thomas’ tweet. Their retaliation was a clap back to the two times major championship winner. They singled him out and called him out for not being available to ‘communicate.’ They tweeted, “You’ve cancelled every meeting we’ve planned with you, but we are reaching out again.”

They further mentioned that the tour had a seat at the tournaments for the past seven years. Therefore, he should give USGA a call so that they can give him a seat. He was the one asking USGA to communicate, he kept cancelling the meetings. However, singling out one of the best players could have worked better with the USGA. They later admitted that further communication with the golfer had been made, and he did not cancel the meetings.

What did Thomas say about the rules?
The players did not accept the new revisions the way the authorities wanted. The FedEx Cup championship winner called the rules bad during a press conference. According to him, the rules were “terrible.” He even furthered the displease with revisions after the penalty of Adam Schenk, because his caddie lined him up in a bunker.
