Rory McIlroy Wins Hearts With Subtle Women’s Golf Reference During Emotional Ryder Cup Interview

This past weekend Team Europe was defeated at Whistling Straits as Team USA secured a historic win. During the event, Team Europe’s Ryder Cup veteran Rory McIlroy had tears in his eyes as he spoke about his team and the experience. The 32-year-old shed light on various topics, including young people getting inspired.

McIlroy, who did not perform well on the first two days, finally managed to win his singles match against Xander Schauffele.

McIlroy was visibly upset after having a tough Ryder Cup week. However, the 19-time PGA Tour winner still stepped up for an interview and didn’t fail to mention young minds and the Solheim Cup. As per McIlroy, these prestigious events are important to inspire the younger generation.

“It is by far the best experience in golf, and I hope the boys and girls watching this today will aspire to play in this event, or the Solheim Cup,” he said. “Because there’s nothing better than being a part of a team, especially with the bond that we have in Europe”. 

Even with his tough week, McIlroy did not forget to think about what such events mean.

The Solheim Cup can be seen as the women’s golf equivalent of the Ryder. It was held at the Inverness Club, Ohio, USA, Team Europe claiming their second straight victory. The event was introduced in 1990. While women’s golf has been gaining more and more attention and love, a little support goes a long way.

Rory McIlroy expressed disappointment at his own performance

McIlroy is one of many PGA Tour golfers promoting women’s golf and is always one to encourage fans to support the women’s game as well. The Solheim Cup this year was a success, with fans gathering to cheer their team in Ohio.

During his talk with the media, the four-time major winner also talked about how he was disappointed with his own performance. He said, “I’ve been extremely disappointed that I haven’t contributed more for the team. I’m glad I got a point on the board today for them but it’s been a tough week”.

He added that the more he plays in the Ryder Cup; he realizes it is currently the best event in golf and how he loves being a part of it.

McIlroy lost his first three matches at the Ryder Cup, two of them with Ian Poulter, and one with Ryder Cup rookie and close friend Shane Lowry.

In the end, he was out of Saturday’s morning foursomes, making it the first Ryder Cup session McIlroy has missed. He won 3&2 agains Schauffele.
