Athletes are often recognized based on the awards and honors they receive. The way he has dominated the golf course, it comes as no surprise that Tiger Woods has a number of awards. But there is one that he probably holds dear that he received in 2018 for his remarkable performance. And Woods shared the stage for that award with none other than the rising tennis star Naomi Osaka.

The 82-time PGA Tour winner has seen a lot of ups and downs in his career. But his resolve and will to keep going are what distinguishes him from other athletes. Despite the rough patches Woods has been through, he refuses to stay down. And this not only makes him the perfect role model for many but also makes him the top pick for any accolade.

His stunning comeback performance wins Tiger Woods a prestigious award

In September 2018, the golf legend was labeled as the United States Sports Academy Athlete of the Month. Woods took home the title as the male athlete. Alongside him, Naomi Osaka won the title for women. The two were undoubtedly untouchable in their sport and well deserving of the title.

Osaka had just that month won her first Grand Slam title, beating tennis icon Serena Williams in straight sets in the US Open. She became the first Japanese tennis pro to ever win the Grand Slam title, and her performance further gained her recognition by the USSA.

That same month, Woods won his first professional event in more than five years. This put an end to his PGA Tour win drought and marked his 80th Tour win. With a total score of 11 under par, Woods won the 2018 Tour Championship in Atlanta.

Was this Woods’ first Tour Championship win?

The 2018 win, although very significant in Woods’ career, was not his first Tour Championship win. In fact, Woods has won more Tour Championships than any other player, aside from Rory McIlroy. Both Woods and Rory each hold three Tour Championship trophies, with McIlroy winning the most recent one in 2022.

Woods’ win in 2018 was a statement to the golf world that he wasn’t done yet. Despite many having written him off, the golf pro went on to take home a win and has since won twice more on the tour. It now has been more than 4 years since Woods secured a Tour win. He last took home a title at the Zozo Championship in October 2019.
