Grigor Dimitrov has often been criticized for his lack of grit and determination on the big occasions. Despite having immense potential and high expectations, the Bulgarian has failed to live up to his standards. However, hiring the American Andre Agassi, to help him out this season, might just be the missing ingredient in his strategy.

He was asked during his press conference in Brisbane, if Agassi would be travelling with him to the Australian Open. “Yeah!”, said Dimitrov. “He’s coming to Melbourne. So yeah, we’re going to be reacquainted pretty soon”, he added.

“So, yeah, I love spending time with him”, said Grigor Dimitrov. “And, again, as I said, the whole team is pretty happy to have him around, and I mean, you learn something on a daily basis”, said the Bulgarian. Dimitrov hopes that Agassi does stick around, and help him with his game in the upcoming 2019 season. Andre Agassi will also look to develop a long term relationship, after having an unsuccessful stint with Novak Djokovic, which did not last long enough.

“We chat”, said Dimitrov. “I mean whenever we have the time, obviously the time difference doesn’t help, but we just want to keep on building on what we’ve sort of started, especially this off season, and potentially get back on the right track and have a better result”, said the Bulgarian.

Dimitrov will feature at the Brisbane International, where he overcame the Japanese Nishioka in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in his first round. He will face John Millman, who caused one of the upsets of the year, by knocking out Roger Federer out of the US Open earlier in 2018.

Dimitrov has been a champion here before, and he has fond memories of the tournament. “It’s a great tournament, to be honest, absolutely one of my favorites”, said Dimitrov. “And I think the beginning of every year it’s so important, and this is obviously my choice since, I don’t know, six, seven years in a row already”, he continued. “So that’s something that obviously I enjoy, but as I said, I’m really focused to just build up now, and of course, knowing that I’ve done well here, I think it always helps me to play better and perform better.
