Grigor Dimitrov pays tribute to his former coach and mentor, Peter McNamara, who passed away at the age of 64 after a quiet battle with cancer.

Australian media reported that Peter McNamara died peacefully at his home in Germany on Saturday after a long battle with prostate cancer. The news of his death plunged the tennis world into mourning as people around the world poured tribute to the Australian legend on social media.

Grigor Dimitrov praised and thanked McNamara for developing him as a player. He wrote on social media, “Today is a sad day for me as I lost a former coach and mentor. Peter McNamara is someone that I will never forget. He played a big role in my development, not only on the court but also as a person.”

The Bulgarian also gave his condolence to Peter’s family and friends. He further added, “I will always be grateful for our time together. My thoughts and prayers are with Peter’s friends and family during this difficult time. Miss you coach.”

Peter McNamara conquered five singles titles and nineteen doubles title. He also won Australian Open doubles in 1979 and Wimbledon Championships twice in 1980 and 1982, partnering with compatriot Paul McNamee.

The Australian hanged up his boot in 1987 after playing the sport for 13 long years. However, he came back to become a successful coach as he coached Mark Philippoussis, Grigor Dimitrov and more recently rising women’s star Wang Qiang of China.

McNamara joined the Patrick Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in Paris in 2009 and worked extensively with Grigor Dimitrov. The two ended their partnership in 2011.

Patrick Mouratoglou also praised the Australian on the social media platform. He wrote on Twitter, “He was very charismatic, totally passionate about his job and such a great teammate. He did an incredible job with Grigor Dimitrov helping his transitions to the pros.”
