Former world No.3 Grigor Dimitrov cruises past through the next-gen star Alex De Minaur in straight sets 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 in 2 hours and 7 minutes to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open 2019 for the first time in his career.

There was very little to differentiate between the two in the opening set. Alex De Minaur earned his only breakpoint opportunity in the 3rd game of the match but the Australian couldn’t capitalize on to it.

The two players held their service game till 6-5 but Grigor Dimitrov shifted gears at the right time when De Minaur was serving to stay in the set. At 6-5, the Bulgarian earned his first breakpoint opportunity of the match and grabbed it after an unforced error from Alex De Minaur to win the match 7-5.

Set 2

Grigor Dimitrov took the momentum to the second set as he broke Alex De Minaur in the fourth game of the second set. The two held their service game till the end of the set with Dimitrov claiming the set 6-3.

Set 3

Grigor Dimitrov failed to grab a breakpoint opportunity at 2-2 in the third set. It was for the first time in the match that Dimitrov’s shot selection failed him. However, the 28-year-old broke the Australian in the 7th game of the set to take a crucial lead. While serving for the match, Grigor Dimitrov held his serve and won the third set 6-4 and win his first match against Alex De Minaur.

He will face Roger Federer in the quarterfinals of the US Open 2019. Earlier, the Swiss defeated David Goffin in straight sets in just 88 minutes to reach his 56th Grand Slam quarterfinals.
