One of the notable events in the calendar season of tennis is the Hamburg European Open. The tournament, which was an only ATP event for a while, got a WTA license and held the competition for women this year. The competition was held at different times during the year.

Just now, there has been a positive development that the men’s and women’s competition will be held as a combined event from 2022 onwards.

On the merger of the men’s and women’s schedule, tournament director Sandra Reichel stated, “I couldn’t be happier that we were able to accomplish this with our partners. To me, it’s a dream come true! I consider a combined tournament to be the ultimate offering for tennis fans.”

1978 was the last time that the tournament was held simultaneously for ATP and WTA tours. Thus, this move will be a reintroduction after 44 years.  

A positive development for tennis 

The Hamburg European Open 2022 is going to be held as a combined event. Both the men and women will be competing simultaneously at Rothenbaum from 16th July to the 24th of July in 2022 in an exciting tennis contest.

Speaking about this event, in the 2021 season, Spanish tennis player Pablo Carreno Busta won the event in the men’s singles category. In the women’s, it was Romanian tennis player Elena Gabriela Ruse who ended up lifting the title. 

As the 2021 season is nearly over, it will be interesting to see how players from both the men’s and women’s sections prepare themselves during the off-season. We wish all players the very best moving forward.
