

Current ATP World number three Dominic Thiem advanced through to the fourth round of US Open 2020. He defeated former US Open champion Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the third round on Saturday.

This US Open match marked the third time the two have met on court. On Saturday, Arthur Ashe Stadium saw Thiem win for the third time against the Croatian player. Thiem took the first two sets before Cilic claimed the third. However, Thiem recovered and took the match in his favor.

Dominic Thiem is yet to give his 100% on the court
In the post-match interview, Thiem expressed his belief that he is yet to give his all in the tournament. He said he tries to improve himself with each game.
“I think it comes automatically the things I improve with every match on this high level, I improve basically everything in my game. I think also here at this tournament it got better each match.”

He praised his opponent by saying, “Today was a good match against a great champion. First two sets came pretty easy. I think he came out a little bit slow also because of the tough matches he had in the opening rounds. He gave me some little mistakes.”

He was lucky to break Cilic in the first games and had no qualms admitting it.
“I had luck that I was breaking him in the opening games of the first two sets, which always helps a lot against these big servers. Then he raised his level a lot in sets three and four. Good tennis, very close. Probably would have gone to a fifth when I don’t save these breakpoints at I think was 2-All.”

Overall, Thiem was happy with the match but hopes to improve and polish his game more in the future to win his first Grand Slam.
“In general was a good, close match. I’m happy. But, yeah, of course, I have to improve to get the chance to get further.”

The second seed will face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the next round. Felix has not lost a single set the tournament this week. Thiem is excited to play against him and cited his experience as his advantage going into the match.
