German star Alexander Zverev has been a major figure on the ATP tour. He is a part of the ‘NextGen’ who are expected to take over tennis once the ‘Big 3’ retire. He has not won a grand slam yet and his former coach Juan Carlos Ferrero has explained why in an interview with Ubitennis.

Alexander Zverev and Juan Carlos Ferrero worked together for 8 months before they parted in what was not an amicable split. Their relationship has not gotten better since then as Juan has just taken a few swipes at Zverev’s consistency and work ethic. He said,
“I trained Zverev for eight months and I noticed that. He used to go back and forth a lot in the same match. That’s why I think he couldn’t win a Grand Slam yet. That irregularity leads him to play the fifth set heads or tails.”

Juan also talked about Zverev and the other NextGen players’ work ethic. He said that they are good but are often distracted by phone calls and social media that do not let them train the right way. Juan went on by giving Alexander Zverev as an example. He said,
“Zverev was, for example, three hours on the court, but he could not perform quality training for an hour and a half. There were protests. Stops. Anger. Distractions.’
As a result of such disagreements, both of them parted ways after the 2018 Australian Open. Alexander Zverev did win titles after that but has still not won a grand slam. Maybe Juan Carlos Ferrero was right about his work ethic inhibiting his success.
If that is the case, let’s hope Alexander Zverev can fix this problem before the ATP tour returns from its suspension in July. If he does, he may the one who ends the reign of the ‘Big 3’.
