Perfect start towards the first Major of the season

Nadal managed to win a warm-up title in the build-up to the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, and didn’t drop a single set throughout the tournament. That win surely boosted his morale and made him believe in himself that he can yet win titles on the biggest of stages.

The 1997 US Open finalist stated, “He is a genetic freak of nature and also, his mental fortitude is second to none. If you wanted one guy playing for your life for one match, he is your man.”

Greg then talked about how the odds were stacked against Nadal because of his long injury layoff in the 2021 season. But it’s always a bad idea to doubt the Spaniard, who’s shown time and time again, that he can return to an elite level quickly after an injury.

Rafael Nadal won against all odds

Reflecting on the match, there came an instance when Daniil was up by two sets and nearly broke Rafa in the third set, and was within touching distance of lifting the title. Like we’ve seen in the past, Nadal found a way to win the game and overturn the fate of the match in his favor.

Rusedski added, “Rafa just showed us the fortitude to fight. Let’s not forget that crowd. That crowd was insane, how much they were behind Rafa, wanting to see history happen as well. For me, probably his greatest accomplishment in his career.”
