Rafael Nadal has often been compared to various legends of other sports. Recently, his uncle and former coach, Toni Nadal, spoke about his nephew and Argentine soccer legend Lionel Messi.

Speaking to Bein Sports, Toni gave his opinions on whether Rafa can be compared to Lionel Messi. Toni Nadal placed Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal on the same pedestal as Lionel Messi.

“Is he comparable with Rafael?. Rafael is also one of the best in history. It is true that both have followed different ways to reach the top. Messi would be more similar to what Federer does, regarding the style of play, but I think he is similar to Rafael, too.”

Further adding to Rafa’s legacy, Toni said that the Mallorcan’s ability is unmatched and will be tough to equal for other players.

“Sometimes we see Rafael and we only see him running. Rafael has an amazing ability to hit really difficult points and they are tough to be equaled. Thus, they can be similar in the end.” 

Toni Nadal also placed Lionel Messi at the highest among all soccer players. Toni was amazed by Messi’s goal-scoring ability and hunger.

“Messi has been the best in the world for 12-13 years doing amazing things scoring goals. Honestly, I don’t know how you can play better than him.”

Rafa Nadal at ATP Finals 2020

Coming back to his nephew, Rafa made it into the semifinals of the ATP Finals 2020 after a gritty win against defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas. The match was like a knockout quarterfinal match with the winner advancing to the semifinals and the loser going back home.

Now Rafa will play Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals. Medvedev was the group winner of ‘Group Tokyo 2020’. The Russian navigated through the tough group containing former ATP Finals champions Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev.
