Phil Jones bicycle kick attempt went comically wrong

Manchester United defender Phil Jones, apparently found himself free when the ball was played into the box. He sensed the opportunity to go for an extra-ordinary bicycle kick instead of an ordinary header. But it looked extra-ordinary only until the ball had left the foot. Unfortunately for him, Phil Jones’ overhead attempt was blocked by his own hand. The referee, signalling a handball, awarded a free kick to the opposition.

Jones’s attempt for glory turned out rather amusing as Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also seen smiling after the defender’s attempt.

Manchester United faced Norwegian side Kristiansund in their fifth pre-season friendly encounter and maintained their perfect record so far in the pre-season. The match also saw United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s son Noah make his debut for the Norwegian club.

Manchester United will face AC Milan next in another pre-season friendly which will be played at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday, 3rd August.

Though Manchester United managed to win the match by virtue of Juan Mata’s injury time free kick, the match is being talked about more for Phil Jones’ failed attempt for the bicycle kick.

On June 13, 2011, Manchester United confirmed the signing of a 19 year old Jones, who had impressed Sir Alex Ferguson. The legendary United manager had predicted that Jones could become one of the most famous stars at Old Trafford. But this is not what he had meant by famous. Jones is many times recalled rather hilariously for his funny expressions and slip ups. This incident only gave an excuse for social media to get at the Manchester United defender, and twitter exploded with some hilarious tweets referring to him.

“You can always rely on Phil Jones for a bit of comedy,” a tweet read while a few other tweets further went on to mock Phil Jones.

“Every time Phil Jones plays, Leicester add 10m to Maguire’s fees,” tweeted a fan in reference to United’s unending pursuit of Harry Maguire.
