“I have news … I will be coming back for the Davis Cup in Copenhagen,” Holger Rune posted on Instagram. “I am thrilled … it has been 11 months of work. I missed it much. To be back playing and starting at home it will be beautiful.”

While Denmark celebrates Holger Rune’s return, the immediate task on the court requires focus against an unknown opponent.

At 21, Radulov comes into this match with the drive of an underdog. The Bulgarian player has already earned Davis Cup experience with a 2–1 singles record for his country. For Radulov, this challenge is not going to change his career trajectory. He will play freely, aiming to attack Rune’s movement and take advantage of the Dane’s slow buildup. The Bulgarian will run Rune into long rallies, considering it will be difficult for the tennis veteran to regain his speed after a long hiatus.

For Rune, this first match is not about the difference in rankings but about getting his match fitness under control. After dropping to World No. 133, Rune needs match time and hard competition to rebuild the powerful play that helped him reach the top five on the ATP tour. Facing a young and upcoming player gives Rune a tough physical test right away

Rune’s Slow and Steady Road to Comeback

Rune’s path to this Davis Cup moment has been all about a lot of patience and hard work after the physical setback. His injury saga began in October 2025 during the ATP semifinal in Stockholm. A sudden rupture of his left Achilles tendon forced him to retire from the match and the event. He later underwent emergency surgery. The painful injury extended to months of rehabilitation, keeping the star out for the majority of the 2026 season. Although he did consider returning to play on several occasions but eventually missed the Australian Open, Indian Wells, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon.

In August, Rune did tough practice sessions with Carlos Alcaraz to test his limits, but later, he pulled out of the US Open to avoid further damage. “I want to come better than before, ” he opened up about his recovery. “After an injury I do not feel pressure. I just want to play, enjoy being and try to be the biggest player I can be and win.” By waiting to return in the Davis Cup, Rune chose the support of his home and Danish fans to restart his competitive fire.

Holger Rune’s past Davis Cup record shows that he does well when he plays for Denmark. In seven ties, Holger Rune has an 8–4 singles record with big wins over experienced players such as Pablo Carreño Busta and Miomir Kecmanović. Holger Rune knows the emotional pressure of team tennis, where national pride can be stronger than personal form. Managing that atmosphere while dealing with the challenge of testing his Achilles tendon in a real match will decide his performance on Friday.

Rune’s match with Radulov means more than just the first game in a Davis Cup tie. It ends his 11‑month recovery and starts his return to the top of world tennis. If Rune can stop Radulov’s fearless drive and trust his movement, this important return will push him to regain his former glory. The match begins right after the first singles match between Elmer Moller and Grigor Dimitrov, scheduled for 9 am EST on Friday.
