“Hope To Be Back Out There Soon” – Ashleigh Barty Thanks Fans During Coronavirus Outbreak

The tennis season is officially under suspension following the alarmingly rising coronavirus cases across the globe. It all started with the cancelation of the Indian Wells last week, which was followed by cancelation of Miami Open. Ashleigh Barty gave us her thoughts today on the whole fiasco.

Even after the suspension of Indian Wells the organizers of Miami Open were holding firm that the event will go ahead. Many of the players were left in limbo before the Miami Open was officially canceled. They stayed back in Indian Wells to wait and prepare for Miami.

However, soon after that, the event was canceled due to the rapidly spreading virus, and the players were left stranded in the USA. Due to many travel sanctions, all players could not simply up and leave.

“Gutted to be leaving” – Ashleigh Barty

Ashleigh Barty, the WTA World No. 1 was in Indian Wells too. She will now drop 120 points from her round of 16 run at Indian Wells last year.

The Aussie would have entered Miami Open as the defending champion. However, with the cancelation she will now drop a further 1000 points before the Miami Open week.

Barty finally bid adieu to Indian Wells today to return to Australia.

Barty of all people would be truly sad to see the Premier Mandatory event in Miami get canceled. She won her first Miami Open title last year, which also enabled her to break into the WTA top 10 for the first time.

And as it turned out, it was just the beginning of her rise in the sport. The Aussie player went on to win the French Ope title a few months later. Moreover she also captured the year-end WTA Tour Finals. She ended 2019 as the World No. 1.

Barty has not played in a tournament since Qatar Open, and given current circumstances, we won’t get to watch her compete for a couple of months more at least.
