The battle royale genre has been ruling the gaming scene for quite a while now. While considering its vast popularity, we have to remember the ease of access vested by specific games. Most of the successful battle royale games are free. Fortnite is a prime example of one of the most influential and top-rated games of all time.
In a way, over the past 3-4 years, Fortnite has somehow driven games into evolving in their own way. To have a spot in the list of best battle royales, a game needs that element of accessibility. This comes with the game being free in the first place. Over the years we have seen several games choosing this path to reach out to more people.
Some of the finest examples would be Call Of Duty Warzone and Apex Legends. Non-BR games like Valorant have also helped their cause by doing this.

Games being free to play is great, but there are some tradeoffs. It has drawbacks, like being more susceptible to people cheating. All these problems do come in the way, nevertheless, free games always dominate in terms of popularity.
