The bout between the two has been in the offing long enough. While Poirier stands at #3 in the Lightweight division rankings, “The Hangman” reserves the fifth spot.

In what fans and pundits are already considering to be a fight of the year prospect, the two will headline the UFC’s fourth event in Las Vegas.

“Diamond” Poirier is coming fresh off his loss at the hands of Khabib Nurmagomedov, when he competed in a title unification bout. This is the first time after his loss at UFC 242 that the former champion will fight.

On the other hand, Dan Hooker is coming off a victory over Lightweight veteran Paul Felder. Their bout in February ended in a controversial split decision. Even though Hooker bagged the victory on the judges’ scorecards, 12 out of 17 media outlets scored the fight in favor of Felder.

Thus, Poirier will look to getting back on the winning side after his loss to Khabib. Meanwhile, Dan is on the highest tide of his career yet and will aim to keep it rising. He is on a three-fight winning streak and is mentally at a better condition going into this fight.

What makes Dustin Poirier vs Dan Hooker a “fight of the year” prospect already?

2020 has been a rather bizarre year for the world, let alone the UFC. However, the promotion saw some extremely exhilarating fights as soon as they ventured onto the road back to schedule. We saw the mega brawl between Justin Gaethje and Tony Ferguson, Dominick Cruz’s loss at the hands of Henry Cejudo, and of course, the recent multiple Bantamweight highlight reel finishes at UFC 250.

Then what makes the MMA experts so confident about the explosiveness of Dustin vs Dan?

First off, Poirier will be the toughest challenge for Hooker yet in the UFC. Although Poirier is coming off a loss, it doesn’t paint the entirety of just how dangerous he is. After all, before the clash with The Eagle, he was coming off victories over Max Holloway, Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, and “Showtime” Anthony Pettis.

Nevertheless, Hooker will look to live up to the hype that he has generated with his impressive stint at the UFC to date.
