Stan Wawrinka On His Fitness
Stan Wawrinka recently had a talk with RTS. During the chat, he was asked how he feels about playing some tournaments right now after such a long break caused by the coronavirus. He replied by saying,

“I’m not in good shape at the end of this period and I don’t want to take risks by playing tournaments now.”
I think we can all understand why Stan is being cautious. He obviously does not want to get injured again but he is probably not the only one who is taking it slow. Many other players will also be doing the same thing as it not safe to play high-intensity tennis after a long break.

Another reason why Wawrinka is taking things slowly is his experience with his previous injury. After winning 3 Grand Slams between 2014-2016, Stan came into 2017 with high expectations. But sadly, he suffered an injury that forced him to undergo surgery thereby ending his 2017 season early.

After that injury, Stan lost his position at the top. He failed to win any big titles and even dropped out of the Top-250. Ever since then, he has been trying to get back to playing the level of tennis he did in 2014-16.
We did see signs of such a return at the 2019 US Open and the 2020 Australian Open. In those tournaments, he beat Novak Djokovic and outlasted Daniil Medvedev in a 5-set thriller.

Hopefully, Stan will take his time so that he can play his best tennis. He surely has the ability to win some Grand Slams again when the ATP Tour returns from its suspension in August.
