It was the US Open 2020 winner Dominic Thiem vs Diego Schwartzman in the quarters of the French Open 2020. In a marathon match that lasted for five hours and 10 minutes, the phenomenal Argentine Schwartzman managed to find a way to win.

Schwartzman previously made headlines when he defeated Rafael Nadal on clay at the Italian Open 2020. This time he won against Thiem, who has previously played two French Open finals against Nadal. The final scoreline was 7-6, 5-7, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2.

In the post-match interview, Schwartzman admitted that he was rather agitated for some time during the match. The intense pressure must have left him stressed.

“You know, in the second and third set, I was completely out of mind. I don’t know what the people are thinking about me. That time was crazy (laughs). Screaming, talking to my coach. I was so nervous,” said Schwartzman. But after all the hard work, he agreed that he deserved to win.

“This is the third time that I play 5 sets here. I think, this night, I deserved to win,” claimed a joyful Schwartzman.

It was, without a doubt, an exhilarating match. Neither player was willing to give up. But the temperament exhibited by the 28-year-old Argentine in the match was exemplary. He could have lost in the fourth set itself when Thiem was leading with 3 points in the tie-breaker. However, he kept his calm and performed brilliantly under pressure in such a big match.

Diego Schwartzman will most likely meet Rafael Nadal at the semi-finals of the French Open 2020. Nadal lost to Schwartzman in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open last month, and should he go up against Schwartzman again, he will have to give the match his all.
