Boris Becker And Novak Djokovic

In a recent interview with Eurosport, Boris Becker explained a conversation he had with Novak Djokovic before he started coaching him. He said, “My promise to him was that I had to tell him open and honestly the truth. Because everything else doesn’t work and I can’t embellish anything.”

And from what Boris said later, he clearly did keep this promise as he talked about the first form of coaching he gave Novak by telling him,

“The reason why you might not be so good anymore is because you felt too good as number one, you didn’t improve. The other players like Nadal and Federer have adjusted their game. I don’t like your positioning on the court, I don’t like your serve at all.”

Since Novak Djokovic is the kind of player who always wants to improve, he took Becker’s feedback to try to make himself a better player and it worked. The period between 2014-16 was when the Serb was having the time of his life. He set numerous records and established himself as one of the greatest players of all time.

Sadly, this successful partnership came to an end in 2016. But that does mean that both men have a bad relationship. In the same interview, Boris said that he and Novak have met numerous times at Grand Slams when he would have questions about another player.

And it is because of this good relationship that Boris will be happy at Novak’s recent achievements. It is these recent successes that have got the Serb closer in the race to become the GOAT of tennis. And that is a race Boris wants to see Novak win.
