World No.5 Daniil Medvedev is in New York first to defend his Cincinnati crown and then better his runner up performance from the 2019 US Open to win his first Grand Slam. And with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal not playing we could get a new Grand Slam winner.

In a recent press conference, Medvedev spoke about his preparation. And how the withdrawal of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal can change the mindset of the players. With only three Grand Slam winners in the draw, it will be a very open tournament.

“Yeah, of course, there is a, first of all, big opportunity for a new Grand Slam winner, because there is, let’s say, only three Grand Slam winners in the draw of US Open, Cilic, Murray, and Novak, if I’m not mistaken, which of course gives bigger chance for everybody else,” Medvedev said

“Don’t know what to expect” – Daniil Medvedev

On his preparations, the Russian is taking everything, match by match. He is grounded and wants to just be competitive. Every player will be looking closely at their Cincinnati performances to judge their preparations. And it won’t be surprising if we see some strange match results.

“Talking about myself, I always take it match by match, so at this moment I don’t see myself lifting the US Open trophy. I just want to see first where my game is at tournament level, competitive level in Cincinnati because as I say, we’re going to almost 100% see some unbelievable results, maybe some really bad games or some really good ones,” he said

“Kind of don’t know what to expect, because it’s not usual that there is 150 players that didn’t play a match in six months. So it’s never easy to come back,” he added

Looking at the Cincinnati Open draw, Medvedev has an easy road till the semis. He might face Novak Djokovic in the semis, last year also Medvedev beat Djokovic in the semifinal, en route to his Cincinnati title. Medvedev could then face the 2nd seed Dominic Thiem in the final.
