

In 2016, Roger Federer after his Wimbledon Semifinal loss to Milos Raonic announced he will miss the rest of 2016 due to an injury. Everyone thought Federer’s career was over. But then the Swiss master came back much stronger and won two Grand Slams in 2017. And now he has successfully extended his career even though his age is not on his side.
He will turn 39 this year, but still, on his day Federer can go on and defeat the top players. Currently, Federer’s had knee surgery which rules him out of 2020. Could he repeat his 2017 run in 2021, his long term coach Severin Luthi believes he can.

Luthi is also optimistic about Federer’s chances. In an interview with Smash, he played down any retirement rumors. Federer still loves tennis and will keep on playing. He has friends on the tour and his priorities have not changed.
“I don’t think he will retire in 2021. He still enjoys life on the circuit, I have never heard him say that he has to stop because he wants to change his life or that he is tired of traveling,” he said
“Nothing can be 100% excluded, but since he still enjoys tennis and shares time with the friends he has everywhere, I don’t think he will retire in 2021,” he added

He also acknowledged the fact that the current injury situation is similar to 2016. And Federer could come back stronger. He also mentions that Federer will use this to hin advantage. Luthi says the injury came at the best possible time.

“It’s true, there are parallels with 2016. Perhaps he could use that to his advantage. The truth is that this injury arrived at the best possible moment,” Luthi said.
The ranking has been frozen and so Federer’s ranking isn’t getting affected at the moment. Also, Federer will surely want to participate in the Olympics next year. Federer has prolonged his career lets see how long he can continue on top.
